It’s been a big month for Nurture Signal, with more than a dozen improvements shipped and ready for you to try right now. We are super excited about four of them in particular:

1. Generate a session from a file (a lesson plan, for example)
2. Curriculum documents: AI support for your curriculum
3. Let students see feedback after every answer instead of waiting for the end of an assessment
4. Student dashboards with data across all their sessions

We also have a ton more updates in this article, so let’s dive into it all.

## 1\. Generate a session from a file (a lesson plan, for example)

Generating a session used to start with a blank prompt. You described the topic, set the number of questions, then edited what came back until it matched what you actually taught. That works, but the most accurate description of your lesson is usually a file you already have, such as a lesson plan, a handout or source material.

Now you can choose **From a file** instead of **Describe a topic**. Add your lesson plan, assessment, a handout or your notes and Signal creates the questions from that material. You review and edit them before anything is shared.

### Up to 20 questions from one file

Attach one file of up to 20MB and Signal may generate up to 20 questions from it. In file mode the topic and question count fields disappear, because the file is the brief. You can add or remove questions after the initial generation if you need to.

### Supporting documents for personalised feedback

If you have **Personalised feedback** switched on, you can also add optional supporting documents. **These do not generate the initial questions.** They guide the feedback each student receives and help the AI when you generate new questions later. The file you built the session from appears as a one-click suggestion, so you never upload the same thing twice.

### Available on Premium

Creating from a file is a Premium feature, marked with the gold crown in the app. Describing a topic stays available to everyone. See [Nurture Signal plans](https://www.gonurture.com/tutorials/signal/plans/nurture-signal-plans.md) for what Premium includes.

## 2\. Curriculum documents: AI support for your curriculum

A file attached to one session helps that one session only, which is great. But what about files that guide your AI across all sessions? You can now set that up for each classroom.

Every classroom now has a **Curriculum** tab. Upload the material the class works from and Nurture AI reads it and draws on it whenever it generates sessions, questions and feedback for that classroom. Each document shows **Indexing** while it is processing and **Ready** when the AI can use it, with no need to refresh.

### What should you upload into your curriculum?

Think of the Curriculum tab as where you define your curriculum for the AI. The more clearly these documents describe what you teach and how you assess it, the closer every generated question and piece of feedback will be to your classroom. Good places to start:

- **Curriculum documents** for the subject and year level, such as your state or national curriculum, syllabus or exam board specification.
- **Your scheme of work or unit plans**, so the AI knows the sequence, scope and depth you are teaching to.
- **Terminology and glossaries**, so questions and feedback use the vocabulary and definitions you use in class.
- **Assessment criteria**, such as rubrics, marking schemes, success criteria and achievement standards.
- **Exemplars and work samples** at different levels, so feedback can point students towards what a stronger answer looks like.
- **Key texts and resources** the class works from, such as textbook chapters, set texts or source packs.
- **Department conventions**, such as how working should be set out or the command words students are expected to know.

Signal accepts PDF, Word, PowerPoint, spreadsheet, OpenDocument, PNG, JPEG and plain text files, each up to 20MB, with up to 20 documents per classroom. Larger files are sent in parts, so a full scheme of work or a textbook chapter uploads without trouble.

### Should I still upload files to specific sessions, or add them to the curriculum?

Ask yourself one question: is this document for one lesson, or for the whole class?

- **For one lesson, add it to the session.** A handout, a worksheet or a past paper that a single session is built from. Signal uses it for that session only.
- **For the whole class, add it to the Curriculum tab.** Your syllabus, scheme of work, glossary or rubrics. Signal uses it for every session, question and piece of feedback in that classroom.

You can remove a curriculum document at any time. Signal stops using it from then on, and anything it has already generated stays as it is.

## 3\. Let students see feedback after every answer instead of waiting for the end of an assessment

Until now, in a self-paced assessment, students answered every question and only found out how they did once they submitted the whole thing. By then the thinking that produced a wrong answer was long gone.

Now you can choose when students see feedback. A new **Feedback timing** setting on an assessment offers **After submitting**, which is the behaviour you had before, or **After each question**. With the second option, each answer is checked and locked in as it is given, and the feedback shows there and then.

Students can’t change an answer once it’s checked

Once a student’s answer is checked, it is locked in. They cannot go back and change it, even if they realise their mistake straight after seeing the feedback. Let students know before they start, especially if they are used to reviewing their answers before submitting.

### Feedback before the answer

Picture a student who picks the wrong option on question three. With **Feedback before the answer** switched on, they do not see the correct answer yet. They see a **Not quite** card with your explanation and a prompt to think about why, and the right option only appears when they choose **Show the answer**. A partly right answer gets the same treatment under a **Partly right** heading, and an open answer gets the same pause before the model answer.

> Feedback should be more work for the recipient than the donor.

— Professor Dylan Wiliam, Embedded Formative Assessment

That is the pedagogy behind the pause. Professor Wiliam’s point is that feedback only works if it causes thinking, and the moment a student sees the correct answer the thinking usually stops. He often cites Ruth Butler’s 1988 study, in which students who received comments on their work improved while students who received a grade, even alongside the same comments, did not, because the grade was the only thing they read. A revealed answer works like that grade. Holding it back for a moment, and leading with your explanation instead, turns a mark into a question the student has to answer for themselves. That is feedback that improves the learner, not just the work.

### Personalised feedback fits in

On Premium, switch on **Personalised feedback** and the card shows feedback generated in the moment for that student. As soon as they answer, Nurture AI checks what they wrote against how you set the question up: your correct answer and explanation, or for an open answer your model answer and success criteria. It then writes feedback on their actual answer, in place of your standard explanation, and words it so it does not give the answer away. A quiet “Writing your personalised feedback” line shows while it arrives.

## 4\. Student dashboards with data across all their sessions

Signal has always shown you how individual sessions went. The harder question is how a student is going: whether they are moving forward over a unit, holding steady, or stuck on the same misconception week after week. Until now, answering it meant opening session after session and holding the numbers in your head.

Now every student has a **progress profile**. Open a classroom, go to the Students tab and click a student’s name. You will see how they have done across every session they have joined in that classroom. It is the first step towards something teachers have asked us for again and again: seeing a student’s trend across several sessions, not just a snapshot of one.

### Spot the trend, session by session

Under **Understanding**, a chart of their accuracy by session shows each session as its own bar, coloured by how they did, so a student who is climbing, holding steady or slipping stands out straight away. **Engagement** has the same chart for where they sat on the engagement spectrum each time. Above both, four numbers sum up the student’s time in the classroom so far: sessions attended, the share of scored answers they got right, their average engagement band and how much feedback they have received. Below the chart are the questions they got wrong with what they actually wrote, and open answers marked against success criteria now count too.

### Feedback and their own words

**Feedback received** collects the AI feedback on their answers and every reply you have sent them. **In their own words** gathers their end-of-quiz confidence, reflections, comments and questions. And **Sessions attended** lists each session with the student’s own numbers rather than the room’s: their correct answers, their reactions, their comments.

### Starts with your class list

Profiles are most useful when the whole class is in Signal, so you can now add students to a classroom by hand before they have joined anything. They appear in the Students tab marked **Not joined yet**, and when a listed student later joins a session the two records line up, so each student shows once with their full history.

### More to come

This is the first version, and we know there is more to do to make a student’s progress over time really clear. Over the coming months we will keep improving how profiles show trends across sessions, so the pattern jumps out without any reading between the bars. If there is a view you wish you had, tell us: it will shape what we build next.

## Also new this month

A dashboard for everyone.

Teachers and students both get a new sidebar with Dashboard, Sessions and Classrooms. The dashboard shows you your live sessions, open assessments with submission progress, upcoming and draft sessions, recent results and this week’s AI allowance. Students see sessions to rejoin, assessments to do, and what is coming up.

Question descriptions with images.

Any question can now carry a description underneath it, such as a scenario, a passage, some figures or a diagram, with formatted text and up to three images. Long descriptions are collapsed behind **Show more** for students so the answers stay on screen.

Text or maths in every writing field.

Every writing field now has a **Text / Maths** switch at the right of its toolbar, for students’ answers, explanations, comments and reflections, and for your questions and model answers. Maths mode starts each line as a formula, so typing a fraction builds one straight away.

More than one model answer.

An open-answer question can now hold up to five model answers, each tagged with the success criteria it meets, so students can see what separates a complete answer from a partial one. All of them inform the criteria check and personalised feedback.

Review AI-written questions before you publish.

If you have not yet opened an AI-generated question in a session, Signal asks you to confirm you have reviewed its answer and explanation before it goes live. Once every AI-written question has been seen, Publish goes straight through.

Session templates with previews.

Library cards now show what a template contains by type, such as two questions, a poll and a reflection, and a read-only preview drawer lets you read every question and checkpoint before you use one. Co-hosts can also be added to a classroom by email before they have an account.

See if your student pasted in their answer.

In open answers, any text a student pasted rather than typed is now highlighted for you, even if they edited part of it afterwards.

Progress saved in assessments.

A student’s answers are saved as they move between questions in a self-paced assessment. If they stop part way through, you can see their partial work under **Not submitted yet** instead of nothing at all.

Everyone who has joined, in one place.

A new participant directory lists every student who has joined any of your sessions, across every classroom, with search, filters and a link through to their progress profile.

Sign in once, from anywhere.

Signing in with your email, Microsoft or Google account from a different region now happens in one step, with no need to re-enter your details, and the region notices that used to appear on the sign-in card are gone.

Students can make their own avatar.

Alongside a sign-in photo or initials, students (and teachers) can now build a cartoon head-shot of their own from Open Peeps artwork: pick a hairstyle, a face, accessories and a colour, or hit shuffle for a surprise. It shows everywhere their name does, so a small bit of personality follows them into every session.

## What’s next

The themes for the coming months are the same ones running through this update: more ways to build sessions from the material you already have, feedback that reaches students sooner and in more forms, and a clearer picture of each student over time. Some of that work is well under way and some is still taking shape, so we are not naming features until they are ready.
