Ended a session or closed an Assessment by mistake? Resume or reopen it so students can carry on, with everything already collected kept.

Updated 20 October 2026

Ended a session too early, or closed an Assessment before everyone had finished? You can open it again. Students join with the same code or link, and everything they’ve already done stays where it was.

**When to use it:** You pressed **End** or **Close** by mistake, the class needs a few more minutes, or a session ended on its own while students were still meant to be working.

## Resume or Reopen

The button depends on the session type:

- **Engage** and **Live quiz** sessions show **Resume**.
- **Assessments** show **Reopen**.

Every ended session shows one of them, whether you ended it yourself or it ended on its own. Co-teachers on the session can use it too.

**Why did my session end on its own?** An Engage session or live quiz ends automatically once everyone, you included, has left it for 10 minutes or more. An Assessment closes when its due date passes, unless you allowed late submissions.

## Resume or reopen a session

1. Open the session.
2. Choose **Resume** (or **Reopen** for an Assessment) in the toolbar at the top of the session page.
    - **On a phone:** open the three dots menu at the top of the session and choose **Resume session** (or **Reopen quiz**).
    - **In presenter view:** open the three dots menu and choose **Resume Session**. Presenter view only resumes Engage sessions and live quizzes. Reopen an Assessment from the session page.
3. If the session ended within the last 8 hours, it opens again straight away and you see “Session resumed!” (or “Quiz reopened”).
4. If it ended more than 8 hours ago, Signal checks with you first. The dialog is headed **Reopen this session?** (or **Reopen this quiz?** for an Assessment), says how long ago it ended, and reminds you that students will be able to join and answer again. Choose **Reopen session** (or **Reopen quiz**) to go ahead, or **Cancel**.

**Paused is not ended.** A paused Engage session or live quiz shows **End** and **Resume** side by side. **Resume** there simply carries on from the pause.

## If the due date has passed

If an Assessment’s due date has passed and late submissions are off, it would close again straight away. So reopening it also turns on **Allow late submissions**. Signal always asks before doing this, even within the 8 hours, and the dialog tells you that late submissions will be turned on.

The due date itself doesn’t change. Anything submitted after you reopen is marked **Late**.

## What happens when you reopen

- **Same code, same link.** Students join exactly as they did before. Nothing new needs to be shared.
- **Everything collected is kept.** Answers, results and insights stay as they were, and new answers add to them.
- **Questions stay as they were.** In an Engage session or live quiz, a question you’d closed stays closed. Open it again if you want more answers.
- **Submitted work stands.** A student who already submitted an Assessment can’t submit it again. Reopening lets students who hadn’t finished carry on.
- **Time while ended doesn’t count.** In an Engage session or live quiz, the time it sat ended is treated like a pause, so it isn’t added to the session’s length.
- **Nothing is sent to Canvas or Teams.** Grades already sent stay as they are.

## When it can’t be reopened

If a session can’t be reopened, the button stays on screen but greyed out. Hover over it to see why:

- **“Restore this session from Recently deleted before reopening it.”** The session is in **Recently deleted**. Restore it first, then reopen it.
- **“This assessment is closed in Canvas. Reopen it there by changing its availability dates.”** Canvas controls when an Assessment set through Canvas Assignments is open. Edit the assignment in Canvas and move its **Until** date later, or clear it. Signal picks up the change the next time the assignment is opened from Canvas.
- **“This assessment’s assignment was deleted in Canvas. Restore it there to reopen it.”** Restore the assignment in Canvas first.
- **“This session has no recorded end time, so reopening it would count all the time since as session time.”** This happens with some older sessions. [Duplicate the session](https://www.gonurture.com/tutorials/signal/creating-sessions/duplicate-a-session.md) and run the copy instead.

The messages name your learning platform as it appears in Signal, which is usually Canvas.

## End it again

When you’re finished, end the session the usual way:

- **Engage or live quiz:** choose **Pause**, then **End**, then **End Session** to confirm.
- **Assessment:** choose **Close**, then **Close quiz** to confirm.

You can resume or reopen it again later if you need to.

**Tip:** **Replay** and **Export PDF** only work on an ended session. While a session is open again they’re unavailable, and they come back once you end it.

## Resume or duplicate?

- **Resume or reopen** when it’s the same class doing the same piece of work: you ended too early, students need more time, or a few students missed it.
- **Duplicate** when you want to run it with another class, or give the same class a fresh attempt later. A copy starts with no answers, so each set of results stays separate and you can compare them.
