How to Generate Feedback Without Student Work (Genuine Attempt)

TeamsCanvasTeacher

Create pedagogy-aligned feedback for a student who genuinely attempted the task, even with no work on file.

Watch the video above, or follow the steps below.

You can create feedback for a student even if you do not have their work, or do not want to upload it. This tutorial covers a student who made a genuine attempt at the task.

Important: without the student’s work, Nurture will not generate a grade. It cannot make a professional judgement on a grade without the work. This flow is for feedback only. You add the grade manually.

Adding student context

  1. Open the student and choose Add student context.
  2. Answer the structured question flow. For “Did the student make a genuine attempt?”, select Yes.
  3. Answer the follow-up questions (understanding, thinking, effort, and up to two things to work on).
  4. Add any custom context you have in the free text box.
  5. Click Generate AI Draft.

Because there is no work to reference, the comment will be a little more generic (it will not quote specifics from their work), but the structured question flow still produces a focused, pedagogy-aligned comment in the “what went well / even better if” pattern.

Approving and grading

Approve the feedback. Then, because there is no work for AI to grade, add the grade manually. You can type a score and a score breakdown yourself, but you cannot use AI to edit the grade without the student’s work present.
