How to access the three session types in Canvas

Nurture Signal works the same way inside Canvas as it does in your browser. The session types, the questions and the insights are identical. The one thing that changes is where you go to start each session type, and that is what this page covers.

When to use it: Before you run your first Signal session from a Canvas course, or whenever you cannot find where to create a particular session type.

If the three session types are new to you, read Engage, Live Quiz and Assessment: which session type to use first. This page assumes you know what each one does and only shows how to reach it in Canvas.

The short version

• Engage and Live Quiz run live in class. Start them from Nurture Signal in your course navigation.
• Assessment is completed by students in their own time. Create it from Assignments in Canvas, not from Nurture Signal.

Students follow the same split: Nurture Signal in the course navigation for anything live in class, Assignments for anything set to complete in their own time.

Opening Nurture Signal in your course

1. Open your Canvas course.
2. In the course navigation on the left, click Nurture Signal. If your school also uses Nurture Assessments you may see a separate Nurture or Nurture Assignments item as well. Ignore it and make sure you are on Nurture Signal.
3. The first time you open it, Signal may ask you to link your account with a code sent to your email. Do this once; after that it opens straight away.
4. Signal opens inside Canvas with your course name at the top and two tabs, Insights and Members. Both stay empty until you have run a session in this course.

Tip: The Members tab fills in on its own as students join sessions from the course. There is nothing to set up here.

Starting an Engage or Live Quiz session

1. From the Nurture Signal page in your course, click Create Session.
2. Signal opens in a new browser tab. You are still signed in through Canvas and still connected to this course; the new tab just gives you more room to work in.
3. Choose Engage or Live Quiz, fill in the session details, and either start the session straight away or choose Prepare for later to finish it before class.

You will also see Assessment listed on this screen, but in Canvas you cannot create one from here. Assessments are built directly into Canvas Assignments, covered next.

Setting an Assessment

An Assessment in Canvas is a native Canvas assignment with Signal inside it, so it is created where every other assignment is created.

1. In your course navigation, click Assignments.
2. Open the ⋯ menu, either on an assignment group or at the top of the Assignments page, and choose the Nurture Signal option. Depending on how your IT team set Signal up it may read Create Nurture Signal session, Nurture Signal assignment or simply Nurture Signal. If a plain Nurture option is also listed, ignore it.
3. The Signal screen that loads is headed Assessment Sessions. Any Assessments you have already built in other courses are listed here, ready to duplicate into this course. Click Create new to build a fresh one.
4. Fill in the session and click Create. Signal creates a draft assignment in this course, and you do the assigning and publishing in Canvas itself.

Where students go

• Live in class (Engage or Live Quiz): students click Nurture Signal in the course navigation and join the session running there.
• In their own time (Assessment): students open it from Assignments, or from their Canvas to-do list, like any other assignment.

Tip: If a student says they cannot find a session, ask which kind it is. The usual cause is looking in Nurture Signal for an Assessment that lives in Assignments, or the other way round.
