Organising sessions by class with groups

You’re running Signal with more than one class and your sessions list is getting hard to navigate.

When to use it: When you run sessions with the same class or cohort over time and want them kept together.

Groups let you keep sessions together — usually one group per class.

Two ways to create a group

From the dashboard. Open the Groups tab, then choose Create Group.

While creating a session. Every session asks which group it should belong to. You can leave it empty, pick an existing group, or create a new one from there.

The second is usually the better habit. The group gets made at the moment you would otherwise have skipped it, and the session lands in the right place without a second trip.

To see one class’s sessions, open its group.

If you use Canvas

You do not need to do any of this. A group is created automatically for whatever Canvas course you are using Nurture in, and every session you create in that course is sorted into it.

Name groups after classes, not topics

The most useful setup is one group per class you teach. Topics change every few weeks; the class you teach stays the same all year. A group called 8B Maths stays useful in November. A group called Index laws doesn’t.

Do it from the start

Grouping is much easier as you go than retrospectively. Once you have twenty ungrouped sessions with names like test and Test 2, sorting them out is a chore — and it’s the point at which most people give up on organising at all.

Choosing the group while you create each session is what makes this painless. Canvas users get it for free.

What it sets up later

Keeping each class’s sessions in its own group is what gives you class-level insight across those sessions — see how groups work. If your sessions are ungrouped, there is nothing to compare.
